The Republic\u2019s refusal to pour knowledge into students is a recollection\u2011friendly claim; its demand for a long education explains why successful recollection is rare and method\u2011dependent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>II. <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Why Broadie\u2019s four objections fail<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<strong> (a)<\/strong> \u201cRecollection is mathematical; dialectic is not.\u201d<\/mark><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broadie is right that dialectic is not geometry and that Plato marks this: <strong>\u201cdialectic\u2026 goes directly to the first principle\u2026 doing away with hypotheses\u201d<\/strong> (VI, 533c\u2013d; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; But it does not follow that recollection is therefore inapplicable. The recollection doctrine was never confined to mathematics: Phaedrus explicitly has the soul recollect ethical Forms\u2014\u201cjustice\u201d and \u201ctemperance\u201d\u2014when it again beholds \u201ctrue being\u201d (247d\u2013e; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; If anamnesis ranges over the same objects that dialectic later re\u2011secures without hypotheses, Broadie\u2019s restriction collapses. Mathematics in Republic VI\u2013VII is propaedeutic\u2014<strong>\u201chandmaids and helpers in the work of conversion\u201d<\/strong>\u2014not the essence of recollection (cf. VI, 533d; Jowett).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>(b)<\/strong> \u201cRecollection doesn\u2019t require prior education; Republic\u2019s ascent does.\u201d<\/mark><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True: Meno\u2019s slave lacks schooling. But Socrates insists that recollection needs guided dialectical prompting. <strong>\u201cRecovering knowledge himself, from himself, is recollection\u201d<\/strong> (Meno 86a; Platonic Foundation)\u2014and it occurs through elenctic questioning.&nbsp; &nbsp; Republic VII merely generalizes this: educators cannot insert knowledge; they must \u201cturn\u201d the soul\u2019s existing power toward being (518c\u2013d; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; The long curriculum is not a substitute for anamnesis but its civic\u2011political scaffolding: the city supplies ordered exercises that keep the soul turned the right way so that the recollective power steadily fixes on first principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>(c)<\/strong> \u201cRecollection requires an audience who can independently certify the result; practical knowledge cannot be certified.\u201d<\/mark><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This badly misreads the Republic\u2019s criterion. Certification for the highest things is not by external prior knowing but by seeing under the Good\u2019s light: <strong>\u201cthat which imparts truth to the known and the power of knowing to the knower\u201d<\/strong> is the Good (509a\u2013b; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; Dialectic provides internal validation by <strong>\u201csoar[ing]\u2026 to the first principle\u201d and \u201cdescend[ing] again\u2026 from ideas, through ideas\u201d<\/strong> (511b\u2013c; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; That structure is wholly compatible with recollection: the soul\u2019s recovered acquaintance with intelligibles becomes knowledge precisely when bound by causes (Meno\u2019s famous tying\u2011down of true belief). <strong>\u201cTrue opinions\u2026 are not worth much until someone should bind them with causes by reasoning. And this\u2026 is recollection\u201d<\/strong> (Meno 98a; Jowett, in a course handout).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:31px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <strong>(d)<\/strong> \u201cThe rulers\u2019 success is explained by education, so recollection adds nothing.\u201d<\/mark><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plato denies that education \u201cadds\u201d content; it effects conversion: <strong>\u201cnot implanting the faculty of sight, for that exists already, but\u2026 turned in the wrong direction\u201d<\/strong> (VII, 518d\u2013e; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; That is the recollection model in civic dress. The program is extensive because politics deforms attention; the cure is a slow, practiced turning so that the soul stably <strong>\u201cendure[s] the sight of being\u2026 of the good\u201d<\/strong> (VII, 518d; Jowett).&nbsp; &nbsp; Education explains how recollection is made firm; it does not replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>III. <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">A better reading of the Republic\u2019s \u201csilence\u201d<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broadie infers from the Republic\u2019s relative silence about anamnesis\u2011vocabulary that anamnesis is inoperative. That inference is undercut by Plato\u2019s own oblique eschatological gesture at 498d (<strong>\u201ccome into being once more and encounter arguments such as these\u201d<\/strong>), which keeps the mythic\u2011recollective background in view.&nbsp; &nbsp; And it is explicitly challenged by Kahn\u2019s point that the dialogue\u2019s reticence is not philosophical but literary: <strong>\u201cthe absence of recollection from the Republic cannot be explained on philosophical grounds but only by literary concerns\u201d<\/strong> (2012).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broadie\u2019s most persuasive claim is that Plato carefully distances dialectic from mathematical procedure. <strong>\u201cPlato uses the Divided Line to show that mathematical methods fall short of dialectic, not as precursors on the way to it\u201d<\/strong> (Broadie 2021, p.\u202f23).&nbsp; &nbsp; Granted. But that supports only the non\u2011identity of dialectic with geometry, not the exclusion of anamnesis. Recollection is about the soul\u2019s prior acquaintance with intelligibles; dialectic is the practice that (i) turns the power already \u201cin the soul,\u201d and (ii) binds true beliefs to causes until the mind finally looks to the Good as the source of both truth and being (VI, 509b\u2013c; 517c; Jowett).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IV. <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-orange-color\">Positive synthesis: recollection under the light of the Good<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best interpretation is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Metaphysical condition:<\/strong> The Good is what <strong>\u201cimparts truth to the known and the power of knowing to the knower\u201d<\/strong> (509a\u2013b; Jowett). &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Psychological condition:<\/strong> The learner\u2019s power is innate; education \u201cturns\u201d it (518c\u2013d; Jowett). &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aetiology of content:<\/strong> The soul has seen the intelligible (Phaedrus 247d\u2013e); hence it can recollect (Meno 81d\u2013e, 86a).&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Epistemic method:<\/strong> Dialectic alone reaches the unhypothetical (533c\u2013d; Jowett) and <strong>\u201cdescends again\u2026 from ideas, through ideas\u201d<\/strong> (511b\u2013c; Jowett), tying belief to explanatory causes\u2014the very \u201cbinding\u201d that Meno identifies with recollection\u2019s completion.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this picture, recollection and the Form of the Good are not rival explanations. Recollection supplies the soul\u2019s standing acquaintance with intelligible being; the Good supplies the illuminating condition under which that acquaintance becomes knowledge; dialectic supplies the method that stabilizes it. The Republic can therefore omit the word \u201c<em>anamnesis<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:51px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:51px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Broadie\u2011style discontinuity is overstated. The Republic deliberately suppresses the vocabulary of <em>anamnesis<\/em>, but it preserves its architecture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">&nbsp; &nbsp; (i) the soul already has the power for knowing intelligibles,<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">(ii) education does not implant knowledge but turns that pre\u2011existent power toward \u201cthe brightest and best of being,\u201d and<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">(iii) dialectic culminates in the Good as first principle.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those three theses fit recollection\u2019s logic without requiring the Meno\u2013Phaedo dramaturgy. The result is compatibility without explicitness\u2014and Broadie\u2019s exclusion goes beyond the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Republic VII makes innate cognitive power and conversion (not implantation) the core\u2014precisely the structure recollection needs<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhereas, our argument shows that the power and capacity of learning exists in the soul already; and that just as the eye was unable to turn from darkness to light without the whole body, so too the instrument of knowledge can only by the movement of the whole soul be turned from the world of becoming into that of being, and learn by degrees to endure the sight of being, and of the brightest and best of being, or in other words, of the good.\u201d<\/strong> (Republic VII 518c\u2013d, trans. The Republic reframes the pedagogy (city\u2011wide, lifelong), but it leaves the cognitive presupposition (a native, truth\u2011oriented power) intact. That undercuts Broadie\u2019s blanket claim that recollection is explanatorily idle in the Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Broadie\u2019s (a): \u201cRecollection is mathematical; dialectic is not.\u201d False dichotomy\u2014the texts make recollection broader than mathematics<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if geometry dramatizes anamnesis in the Meno, recollection is not restricted to mathematical contents. VI 511b\u2013d).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Broadie\u2019s (b) and (d): \u201cIf rulers\u2019 knowledge were guided by recollection, their long education would be redundant.\u201d<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>No\u2014Plato says education<\/strong> <strong>turns<\/strong> <strong>an already\u2011there power<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point of the fifty\u2011year program is not to insert knowledge but to re\u2011orient and stabilize the soul\u2019s gaze upon the Good. Plato himself rejects the \u201cimplantation\u201d model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCertain professors of education must be wrong when they say that they can put a knowledge into the soul which was not there before, like sight into blind eyes.\u201d<\/strong> (Republic VII 518b\u2013c, trans. Jowett).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exactly the educational corollary of anamnesis: the learner\u2019s eye is turned to what is, rather than furnished ex nihilo. That the reform requires rigorous mathematical, musical, gymnastic, and political training strengthens\u2014rather than weakens\u2014the recollective architecture: habituation, purgation, and dialectical drill are the conditions of a successful remembering (in the broad, Platonic sense of recovering access to intelligible being).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Broadie\u2019s (c): \u201cMeno\u2019s recollection is validated by an independent audience; nothing similar is available for practical knowledge.\u201d<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But the Good is not validated<\/strong> <strong>from outside<\/strong> <strong>at all\u2014it is grasped as first principle by dialectic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Republic explicitly identifies the distinctive method of dialectic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThen dialectic, and dialectic alone, goes directly to the first principle and is the only science which does away with hypotheses in order to make her ground secure\u2026\u201d<\/strong> (Republic VII 533c\u2013d, trans. Jowett).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No \u201cindependent\u201d external check is offered for the unhypothesized first principle; rather, successful dialectic itself exhibits why the first principle is first. This is not a problem for recollection\u2019s architecture; it is Plato\u2019s own account of non\u2011demonstrative intellectual vision at the summit (no\u0113sis). Jowett).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing here blocks the recollective framework; rather, it grounds it in the Good as the condition of intelligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5) <\/strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">The oft\u2011cited \u201csilence\u201d: Republic 498d and the alleged avoidance of anamnesis<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broadie stresses that recollection language is largely absent. True; and the single oblique allusion at 498d hardly supports an outright exclusion. Education and dialectic do the turning.
